South Africa takes an easy win against Scotland

London, June 7 (IANS) South Africa defeated Scotland by 130 runs in a Group D match of the World Twenty20 at The Oval here Sunday. Tournament favourites South Africa lived up to their billing in the World Twenty20, beating Scotland by a mammoth 130-run margin in a Group D match at The Oval here Sunday.

Put into bat first, South Africa posted a huge 211 for five in 20 overs with AB de Villiers hitting a whirlwind unbeaten 79 off just 34 balls and Jacques Kallis scoring 48.

South African bowlers packed up Scotland for just 81 in only 15.4 overs. The total was marginally better than the lowest score of 73 recorded by Kenya against New Zealand at the World Championship two years ago in Durban.

For Scotland, Kyle Coetzer struck a determined 42 off 32 balls. They made a disastrous start by losing first four wickets in a space of 10 balls and couldn’t recover from it.

South Africa’s total, which was their highest in Twenty20, was set after some stunning display by de Villiers and Albie Morkel (24) in the last few overs after skipper Graeme Smith (38) and Kallis gave them a solid start.

Brief scores: South Africa 211/5 in 20 overs (AB de Villiers 79 not out, Jacques Kallis 48; Gordon Drummond 2/40). Scotland 81 all out in 15.4 overs (Kyle Coetzer 42; Albie Morkel 2/14, Roelof van der Merwe 2/17, Johan Botha 2/17).
