London, June 6 (IANS) New Zealand started their World Twenty20 campaign with a convincing seven-wicket win over Scotland in a rain-affected match at The Oval here Saturday. Presistent rain proved to be a dampner as the match was reduced to a seven-over affair but both the sides played exciting cricket that saw New Zealand prevailing with one over to spare.

Put into bat, Scotland scored a formidable 89 for four in seven overs with Kyle Coetzer top-scoring with 33 off 15 balls and openers Ryan Watson and Navdeep Poonia making 27 runs each. The New Zealand bowlers, barring Man of the Match Ian Butler (3/19), were relentlessly punished by the Scottish batsmen.

For New Zealand, stand-in captain Brendon McCullum (18) and Jesse Ryder (31) played destructive innings as 50 runs came up in three overs. Ryder’s 12-ball innings was studded with two sixes and three fours and Ross Taylor scored an unbeaten 21 to steer home comfortably.
